Some people are enduring light!

What is this light?” you might ask. To me, light within a person is associated with a genuine smile and a sense of a truly unique soul. People with open-hearted smiles sow the seeds of something spiritual, positive and authentic. And, honestly, it’s rare.
I experienced that forget-me-not smile moment with gifted musician and author, Jessica Chapnik Kahn. I was introduced to her in 2013, just after she played a show at a concert in Adelaide, SA when she was touring with singer Sarah Blasko. My inner voice quietly noted the presence of an angel.

Her song “She is the Sun” stuck in my overwhelmed mother mind. Occasionally, I am looking at my blue-eyed, seven-year-old daughter, and those words still keep resounding – “She is the sun”! Even if the lyrics weren’t intended to be about a mother-child story, the song is a powerful tool for any sensitive heart and mind. We, the audience, interpret the artists’ creations in our way. The music travels deep and helps us go through dark times, guiding us to the light.
In “She is the Sun”, Jessica’s unique musical arrangement, moving vocal, combined with a simple and artistic video presentation is enough to make the song something memorable. Undoubtedly, your association might differ from mine, but you’ll experience a soul’s excursion.
Jessica Chapnik Kahn is Argentinian-Australian and also well-travelled within her journey as an artist, having worked in theatre and TV in Australia as an actor, as well as many musical adventures. As a musician, she has played in many bands, collaborated with many artists, including long-time collaborator musician Ben Lee, composed two soundtracks albums that were nominated for an AFI and ARIA award, and released two albums of her own solo music under the moniker Appleonia. Like many artists, her talents have recently extended and transformed into a new arena.
In 2018, Jessica published her first children’s book about sustainability called Lenny and the Ants, in collaboration with leading food rescue charity OzHarvest. Following this, she released a collection of poems and drawings in a limited luxury edition book called MADRE. The work was influenced by the birth of her son, Lev. There are an exclusive 350 copies of this book in the world, each personally signed by Jessica.
I do love poetry. It has the ability to teach us something subtle and far from noticeable. Poetry is all about outlining a life story in a figurative way. It is similar to seeing an object in front of you and questioning over and over if your perception is, in fact, correct.

As a mum, I understand the nature of Jessica’s inspiration. Though I have not expressed my experiences artistically (only violin music school in my teens), I have also felt this urge to create something special from my motherhood journey. My mummy diary included writings of my child’s achievements but nothing poetic. I kept it all inside until now. But Jessica, however, with her journey as an artist started scribbling down her experiences in the shape of poems and drawings because her creative soul craved a more profound expression of a new journey as an artist and as a mother.
On the completion of writing MADRE, Mother Courage was created, an imprint by Jessica and Sarah Blasko, two childhood friends and artists experiencing motherhood together for the first time, and finding creative expression in new artistic ventures. Mother Courage, is an umbrella imprint for unique and innovative ideas across various areas including music, poetry, photography, film & television. It is a chance to test the limits and explore the unknown.

Mother Courage joins these two incredibly gifted people- Sarah Blasko & Jessica Chapnik Kahn.
Unfolding and exploring the way to becoming a mother has been portrayed in this poetry book. MADRE is available today! And it’s on my shopping list too. As mothers, as creators, as humans, we are sometimes attempting to explain the unexplainable; we are trying to understand what might not necessarily be able to be understood. This unfolding and exploration is portrayed in the book, MADRE.
